Gunungkidul is one of the regency in the Special District of Yogyakarta. There are so many famous tourism objects there, besides there are also some phenomenal cuisines that you have to hunt and try if you visit there. Here I will give you some most wanted culinaries that cannnot be skipped during your adventure in Gunungkidul.
Fried Grasshopper (Belalang Goreng)
The first and most phenomenal culinary you have to try is fried grasshopper (Walang Goreng/ Belalang Goreng) which you can easily find everywhere in Gunungkidul area. Firstly, fried grasshopper is just the villagers food which not really famous since it was being consumed only by several villagers. Recently, there are some innovation on the fried grasshopper various taste which makes this culinary become so popular for the people who visit Gunungkidul. Basically, there are three various taste of this fried grasshopper, there are original taste (salty), sweet taste (bacem), and spicy taste. There are so many people sell this fried grasshopper at the street border along the way to the regency. Even, this cuisine is also sold in a big shops. For those who have no allergic on insect (especially grasshopper), this culinary must be very delicious in taste which need to be tried soonest. But, for those who have allergic on insect, I suggest you not to try this cuisine otherwise you will get a very bad itchiness.

Tiwul and Gatot
The second culinary which become the identity of Gunungkidul is tiwul. We call it as identity since long time ago when the era was not as modern as now on, the most people (especially villagers) in Gunungkidul made tiwul as their basic food as the replacement of rice. Now, if you currious "What is tiwul?". I can tell you that tiwul is one of traditional food made of dried cassava flour (tepung gaplek). Before the cooking process, the cooker must mix the flour with water and make the perfect batter in order to get the good texture of the tiwul itself. Recently, there is one innovation called "tiwul instant" which make us easier on cooking the tiwul. In Gunungkidul area, there are some outlet which sell tiwul. Usually, it is served with the scraped coconut. Besides tiwul, there is also gathot which made of dried cassava (gaplek). This cuisine usually served along with tiwul, which well-known as gatot and tiwul. Whenever you go to Gunungkidul, don't forget to try both Gatot and Tiwul Gunungkidul and feel the traditional delicious culinary.

Sayur Lombok Ijo and Red-Rice
Finally, the third last famous culinary of Gunungkidul is Sayur Lombok Ijo which usually served with red-rice (Nasi Merah). This culinary is easily you can find also in Gunungkidul. Sayur Lombok Ijo is made of tempe, green chili, some spices, and coconut milk. Previously, this kind of food is only served by some villagers for their family. But currently, it become very famous in Gunungkidul. The good combination of sayur lombok ijo, red-rice, and some side dishes such as tempe or tahu bacem will make this cuisine is very delicious for your lunch. Yummy!
