At the central city of Yogyakarta, there is one phenomenal spot, Tugu Jogja. Tugu Jogja is the monument which becomes the symbol Jogja. The exact location of this historical monument is at the midle of the intersection between Pangeran Mangkubumi Street, Jendral Soedirman Street, A.M Sangaji Street, and Diponegoro Street.
The History of Tugu Jogja
Tugu Jogja has been exist for around 3 centuries. It was built by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono I in 1755. Firstly, the shape of this monument was Golong-Gilig, which means the pillar was cylinder shape (Golong), while the top part was rounded shape (Gilig) and the previous high of this monument was 25 meters. The shape of this monument at the past was presenting the coalescence spirit of the civils in fighting back against the colony and their deep worship in God. According to the history, there was a big earthquake in Yogyakarta on June, 10 1867 which shattered the monument. In 1889, the Dutch government did the renovation on the monument by changing the shape into square shape for the pillar. There are four inscriptions attached on each side of the pillar which shows the people who were involving in doing the renovation. While for the top of monument it became pointed shape. The length of the monument was also changing became 15 meters. Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono VII legitimated this new monument on October, 3rd 1889 with the new name: De Witt Paal or White Monument (Tugu Putih).
The Unique of Tugu Jogja
Located at the central city of Yogyakarta, if we take the imaginary line from this monument we will see the it is located in one line with Mount Merapi, Keraton Yogyakarta, and South Ocean (Parangtritis Beach). Along this imaginary line, there are so many interesting tourism objects that you can find. They are: Mount Merapi, Kaliurang, Yogya Kembali Monument, Tugu Jogja, Stasiun Tugu, Malioboro, Beringharjo Traditional Market, Vredeburg Fortress, Alun-alun Utara, Keraton Yogyakarta, Alun-alun Selatan, Panggung Krapyak/ Kandang Menjangan, Tembi Tourism Village, Manding Tourism Village, and the last is Parangtritis Beach. So amazing!
As the symbol or icon of Jogja, automatically it has its own fascination for the visitors. Most of the visitors come to this spot at the evening for hunting some great and beautiful pictures and enjoying the real feel of Jogja at the night time. Most of the colleges who study in Yogyakarta love to take picture at this monument as the symbol that they love Jogja and as the big wishes that they will come back to Jogja at the future time.

Tugu Jogja at Night
If you come here at the evening, you can find some culinary spots that commonly called "Angkringan" which serve you the original Yogyakarta's cullinary such as kopi joss, sego kucing, sate klathak, and some of them also serve you the modern cuisines one. The position of this monument is on the strategic area, it is quite close to Stasiun Besar Yogyakarta (previously named Stasiun Tugu) and Malioboro at it's south side. So, whenever you go to Malioboro, you suppose to go Tugu Jogja also to feel the real nuance of Yogyakarta and to enjoy the night tourism at this exotic city.
