Vredeburg fortress is one of the historical museums in Yogyakarta. This museum was built during the Dutch Colonial. Vredeburg fortress is located near by Keraton Yogyakarta. The first name of this fortress was Rustenberg Fortress which was built in 1760 as the Rest area Fortress (Benteng Peristirahatan). Under Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono I permition, this fortress was renovated on 1765-1788 and the name changed to Vredeburg Fortress which meant Reconcilement Fortress (Benteng Perdamaian). Historically, there has been some changing functions of this fortress the first function was as the defense fortress (1760-1830), the second function was as the millitary office of Dutch and Japan Colony (1830-1945). After the indepence day of Indonesia, the function of this fortress was as the millitary office of Indonesia (1945-1977). This building was declarated as the national culture information center in 1980. On April 16 1985 it was renovated and became Buffetings Museum which openned for public in 1987. Finally on November 23 1992 it was legitimated as Vredeburg Fortress Museum Yogyakarta.

Museum's Collections

Inside this 2100 meters width building, there are some historical collections such as Dutch's buildings, some dioramas of Indonesian condition before the independence day until the Orde Baru era, and also some historical collections consisted of some pictures of Indonesian buffetings to achieve the independence. On each buildings there are some notes about the first function of the buildings such as ammunition warehouse, armys' house, clamped building, and the gate.Outside this building there are moats all arround. There are also beadle towers on the four sides of the fortress which function were as the place for the Dutch's beadles for looking around both inside and outside the fortress the avoid the brunt. There are some rooms provided in this museum such as library, exhibition room, workshop room, studying room, and guest room.This fortress is also decorated by the beautiful park and some big leafy trees which give the fresh air at the museum. So don't worry of getting bored since you will not get new knowledge in a bored museum but in a cozy museum for sure.

General Informations

This museum opens at 8 am - 4 pm at the weekdays (Tursday-Friday) and at 8 am - 5 pm at the weekend (Saturday-Sunday) While it closes on Monday and on the national holiday. Talking about the ticketting price its really cheap since it cost only 2000 IDR. Even though the ticket cost quite cheap but you don't need to be worry since you will still get the complete facilities in this museum such as free hotspot area, tourguide, toilet, and mosque.

The access to the museum is so easy, it is located on Jend. Yani Street No. 6, Yogyakarta which near by Malioboro street and Keraton Yogyakarta.
